How a perfume is born: between technique and art
The universe behind Arabian perfumes is so vast that one page would not be enough to tell it. Yet, to better appreciate all the qualities of their ingredients, it is important to know their history and come into contact with all the elements that compose them.
Niche perfumery is a unique sensory journey that combines creativity, technique and science, to give life to an exceptional form of art. Starting from research on raw materials and how they react on the skin, fragrances are born that can enchant and fascinate even the least demanding noses.
How a perfume is created
Nothing can be born if it does not start from a very precise idea. Establishing what the source of inspiration is, that is, the conception of the perfume, is the first step to having a basis from which to start. Whether it is an image that has particularly struck the perfumer, or an emotion so strong that he cannot let it escape.
Creating a fragrance means telling a story, and the most engaging stories are those rich in details, existing references, those that capture attention because they are able to excite. And so the freshness of an April morning can be enhanced by a fragrance and become eternal beauty.
To ensure that the story is convincing and able to touch the mind and heart of those who listen to it, it must be understood as best as possible by the narrator. In the same way, a fragrance that can be loved must be born from the hands of a perfumer who has been able to immerse himself in the environment he intends to recreate. Because it is not possible to recreate an atmosphere and represent it without forgetting any of the elements that constitute it, if you have not first been inspired and completely involved by what surrounds it.
To create an Arabian fragrance inspired by the marine olfactory family, for example, the nose must breathe the essence of the sea, must capture the salty air, let itself be transported by the beauty of the coastal landscape, let itself be bathed in salt water. Only by letting himself be inspired by marine nature will he be able to represent his concept of fragrance in a unique and authentic way and with full knowledge of the facts. After all, as Nanni Moretti said, you don't talk about things you don't know.
At this point, it is necessary for the perfumer to be able to capture the most significant odors with which he could create his ideal fragrance, relying on all his olfactory sensitivity. And after having identified them, he can move on to the selection of ingredients.
The ingredients perhaps have the most important task in the process of creating the perfume, because they are what make up the fragrance. The noses who work in the niche perfumery and Arabic perfume sector use natural and very high-quality raw materials, precious and rare ingredients such as essential oils, plant and flower extracts, fruits, spices, woods and resins and other natural elements (or synthetic, in the case of traditional perfumery).
Now that the ideas on the ingredients to include in the fragrance are clear, and with all the information obtained from his inspirational environment, the perfumer can begin to create the structure of the perfume, which is composed of three main notes: top notes, heart notes and base notes.
The first are perceived immediately after application but have a very short duration, because they immediately leave room for the heart notes, which emerge at a later time but constitute the central element of the fragrance. While the base notes are the most persistent, those that define the final imprint that the perfume will have on the skin.
All these odors that the nose has identified can be enhanced even more if combined and mixed harmoniously and with originality, in order to give structure and balance to the fragrance that you intend to create.
And to combine the essences it is important to stick to the olfactory pyramid and, therefore, balance the quantity and type of essences used taking into account the weight that the base, heart and top notes have individually.
In fact, some combinations of ingredients are more capable than others of enhancing the main notes of the perfume. For this reason, one of the techniques to use is experimenting with proportions and intensities, in order to create a harmonious and pleasant fragrance, the result of artistic precision with a surprising and high-quality result.
Once you reach the final stages of creating a perfume, you need to dedicate yourself to perfecting the fragrance, subjecting it to tests on different subjects necessary to evaluate its duration, intensity and adaptability to different skin types.
The most loved perfumes must meet people's needs, they must reflect their character, be in tune with their personality. Therefore, this phase is very important to achieve the desired balance and ensure that from those notes a high-quality fragrance is born that satisfies consumers. A fragrance that evokes emotions, that shapes memories, that reaches its completeness as soon as it is worn.
